FILCOM basketball, organised and co-founded by Dennis Benedictos, along with his awesome team of professionals, held their end of year dinner celebration.
This basketball leauge is a highly respected competitive league within the ACT which has been playing at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) arena for some years now.
They started out as a purely Filipino league, however they successfully evolved into a more mainstream league involving players from across the broad spectrum of the ACT community.
Filipino players in FILCOM enjoy the extra competition they get from broadening the multicultural nature of the league. Many teams are mixed in nature and not purely of one nationality.
This demonstrates the mature and commendable multicultural evolution of FILCOM which has earned the great respect of the wider sporting and business community whilst still maintaining a significant Filipino flavour.
This has proven to be a big positive for the Filipino community as a whole. Mr Benedictos is very passionate when talking about being multiculturally inclusive.

Horn Blows for New Lord of the Rings as a Pacman Hornet
Fire-Fight Rematch Rises (July 2017)
In a very fast and hard-hitting boxing match of old-school-slugfest style, the Hornet defeated the Pacman in a unanimous points decision after the full 12 rounds at Suncorp stadium in Brisbane on Sunday 2nd July.
As with many point decisions in professional boxing, the outcome of this result was immediately being challenged by various pundits, now more commonly known as the global 'twitterati class'. However, with dignity and graciousness, like a true professional sporting gentleman, the Pacman respected the judges' decision. In any case, congratulations should be in genuine order to Horn for winning the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) welterweight title.
Now there is talk of a rematch before the end of the year as politicians and leading business people in the cities of Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne battle it out to host the event. Both Horn and Pacquiao have agreed to a rematch.
Melbourne, considered Australia's sporting capital, which has a much larger population than Brisbane, and has Australia's best and largest fully covered weather-proof sporting stadium with a retractable roof, is considered by many as a front runner.

This will take place in front of one of the largest live boxing crowds in world history.

Welcome everyone to the new Battle of Brisbane as the Pacman faces off against the Hornet. This is the Philippines versus Australia - two countries with a great fighting spirit!
The eleven-time world champion, Manny Pacquiao, 'Pacman', considered one of the greatest pound for pound boxers the world has ever seen, is set to fight Jeff Horn, 'Hornet', in the Hornet's home city of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Brisbane is also noted for hosting one of the largest Air Force bases in the world for the F/A-18F Hornet fighter jet. Like the Hornet jets, Brisbane's Hornet boxer will be firing on all engines and moving fast, as his Hornet power will be set against the legendary power of 'Philippine Pacman Punishing Punches'.
This super fight event will be held in the inner-city centre of Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium. This stadium has a capacity of 55,000 people, however more than 50,000 have been sold out, and the organisers have won permission to increase the stadium seating capacity to 60,000 to squeeze in as many boxing fans as possible.
Not only will this be the biggest live audience fight in the Pacman's illustrious boxing career, but it will also be the biggest single sporting event ever held in the Australian state of Queensland.
Melbourne, in the Australian state of Victoria has the largest stadium in Australia with a seating capacity of 100,000 and could also be used as a future boxing venue.
At the moment, Brisbane, Queensland is leading the way by hosting this world class event which will be broadcast to a global audience in the hundreds of millions.
The Pacman made Australian headlines this last weekend by flying to Brisbane from his home of General Santos city in the southern Philippines with his own customised commercially sized Boeing 757 Airbus with a seating capacity of 350. The billion-dollar boxer flew approximately 200 of his family and friends to Brisbane for a one week stay to the delight of Brisbane's high-end hotels. Accommodation in Brisbane over this week in the lead up to the super fight will now be selling at a premium as many thousands more flood in from around Queensland, the rest of Australia and the world.

Alternatively, the Hornet is considered a modern day Rocky Balboa underdog, like that depicted in the movie franchise "Rocky" which rocket-boosted Sylvester Stallone to global 'A list' Hollywood fame. The Hornet started boxing because he was being beaten up in the school yard by bullies. Against the advice of his mother, he began martial arts classes and moved into boxing. He consequently gave himself the skills to take on the thugs. This decision by the boy from Brisbane growing up on the poor side of the socio-economic tracks has now catapulted him to a fight which is the biggest professional boxing match to reach Australia's continental shores.
The Hornet has the fire in his belly as a socio-economic battler and boxing underdog to prove himself against the billion-dollar Pacman, one of the world's most accomplished boxers who himself also once claimed the same underdog status.

FAIRYTALE PRINCESS POWER TAKES ONE OF THE WORLD'S RICHEST HORSE RACING PRIZES AS STEVIE THE WONDER BOY STRAPPER SHARES CENTRE STAGE:
November 2015
The Melbourne cup is the second richest horse race in the world, with a prize purse worth more than $6 million. Only the Dubai World Cup is richer.
In the late 19th century when the Cup first started it was attracting crowds of over 80,000 to the track, which at the time would have been one of the largest if not largest sporting crowds in the world. The cup attendance record in the early 21st century was close to 123,000 people. |
The Melbourne Cup is also called "The Race That Stops A Nation". It is a public holiday in Melbourne. More than 100,000 attended the track on race day 2015, and almost all work places around Australia organised parties to watch and celebrate the event as they dressed up in the latest fashions. It also stops the horse racing world as the Cup is not only one of the planet's most lucrative race events, but it also lures the best bred horses in the world, the most competent jockeys and the most ambitious trainers to this oft-referred "Sport of Kings".
"The Sport of Kings", which may now need a 21st century naming makeover to "The Sport of Kings and Queens", has just been 'rocked' by a young Princess riding the "Prince of Penzance" (named after the famous port town of Penzance in Cornwall County at the south west tip of England). This beautiful young princess has now been elevated to 'Queen of the Global Racetrack' on this fairytale of racing days. The Prince of Penzance's strapper has also been elevated to rock star royal Knight status.
Photo Above: Michelle and Stevie Payne with the Prince of Penzance - Australia and the world's new racing royalty.
Below: Michelle showers Stevie with spoils of victory - kisses of congratulations and appreciation.
Below: Michelle showers Stevie with spoils of victory - kisses of congratulations and appreciation.
The young Michelle Payne has become the first woman to win the Melbourne Cup overcoming massive outsider odds on the day of 101 to 1, as well as being the only female jockey on the day. Michelle belongs to a horse racing family, and is the youngest amongst 11 children. Her mother died in a car accident when she was just a few months old, leaving her father and siblings to help raise her. Another one of her sisters died after falling off a horse. One of her brothers is Steven "Stevie" who has Down syndrome.
Stevie is Michelle's wonder boy horse strapper. He is jovial and full of energy. In one day both Michelle and Stevie have become multi-millionaires whilst also unofficially gaining Australian 'royalty' status as track Queen and Knight to accompany the title of Prince bestowed upon their champion horse, sired by Pentire which has won the King George VI Cup and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes. |
Michelle gave a legendary victory speech saying that horse racing is a male chauvinistic sport and that she hopes her win will motivate other females. Daisy Dumas in the Sydney Morning Herald described this speech about the capability of women as "unambiguous and galvanising".
Australians are an egalitarian society and love the story of an underdog who rises to the top. Michelle, from a poor working-class background, has persevered in a male dominated sport with great spirit. She regards herself as a devout Catholic and believes she was assisted in spirit by her guardian angels and her mother who she never got to know. |
Photo: Stevie and younger sister Michelle dressed for racing since they were young children. More than two decades later they're still an awesome racing team.
|
Michelle is very devoted to her older brother Stevie who is her hero. She is also still looking for the right man to marry one day, settle down and have a family.
Michelle and Stevie have proven that with the right spirit a person can achieve their dreams against the odds whilst challenging traditional societal biases which are thrown up like hurdles. They have proven that a person's gender or physical looks is not a barrier to winning in life, even in one of the world's richest sports. Since the days of the late 19th century Victorian gold rush which made Melbourne a large global city, as people from almost all parts of the world converged on Victoria to make their fortunes and build their dreams, Australia has gradually built an assimilated society which cares for people from all cultures, for gender equality and for people with differing looks or social cognitive abilities. This is based on a universal premise that every human has something positive to contribute if they choose to, and that they should be allowed to achieve their full potential in their chosen career and life path as Michelle and Stevie Payne have so wonderfully proven. |

TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN
Judges give win to Mayweather despite being continually on the back foot running away from the advancing Pacman.
Crowd clearly behind Pacman.
2nd May 2015
Many boxing fans believed Mayweather adopted a safe strategy of 'take the money and run'. Mayweather was continually on the back foot trying to stay away from Pacman. Much of the action was Mayweather dancing around the ring on his toes in what could possibly be described as a display of 'Ballerina Boxing'.
Pacman said: “I thought I won the fight. He [Mayweather] didn’t do anything. He moved outside.” |
Nevertheless, Pacman made the Philippines proud as he played the honest fair fight, gave it all he had and won the respect of the massive crowd in Las Vegas and around the world.

PACMAN and MAYWEATHER Weigh-In Results and
Staredown in an American Wild West Showdown
1st May 2015
Pacquiao (Pacman) and Mayweather completed one of the wildest weigh-ins in the history of boxing at the jam-packed MGM Grand Garden Arean, Las Vegas. For the first time fans had to pay to witness the weigh-in.
Pacman, who crossed the world's largest ocean to participate in this fight was not on home ground, however he was the clear favorite like a home town hero. Pacman weighed in only one pound under Mayweather, however Pacman who carries the underdog status, has the substantial heavier weight of support cheering him on for a victory.
Pacman fever has not only hit ground zero of America's Wild West in Las Vegas, but has spread all around America and the globe as the biggest boxing TV event in history is on from the staredown and the final 24 countdown to the showtime showdown.

Philippine Nation to Heat Up During Pacquiao Mayweather Fight.
Fridges and Airconditioners to be Turned Off as
Power Supply for TV Usage Will Surge
(1st May 2015 - 1 day till the Fight)
Many nations in their history have a moment or moments they can remember when they collectively stop to engage in one activity. This is particularly a truism in the age of international sport and live global TV coverage. Australia experienced such a moment in 1983 when it took the America's Cup away from the prestigious New York Yacht Club for the first time in the history of the competition. Australia beat the world yacht racing superpower and loved it! After many celebratory drinks, the Prime Minister of Australia at the time, Bob Hawke, even made the famous statement on national TV: "Any boss who sacks someone for not turning up to work today is a bum". Considering ordinary Australians were the democratic bosses of the Prime Minister they took to heart the words of their elected leader and did not sack him for not turning up to his normal work for that day either - basically the whole country was united in euphoria. In any case, it is unlikely the Philippine President will make such a statement if Pacquiao wins.
However, on a more personal note many are portraying this as an individual good versus evil battle between Pacquiao who is widely regarded as a religious, humble-speaking family man from the traditional countryside and Mayweather from Grand Rapids City, USA, who has been charged 6 times with domestic violence and also served jail time for the crime.
The whole of the Philippines as well as the majority of its massive diaspora of approximately 12 million plus citizens and those of full or mestizo (mixed) Filipino heritage all around the world will watch with pride in the hope that Pacquiao can win. Even many Americans, who may not be fond of Mayweather's personality could be hoping for a Pacquiao victory.
The power surge from TV usage in the Philippines is predicted to be significant so authorities have advised many parts of the Philippines to turn off airconditioners and fridges during the fight so there is no power failure.
The Philippines therefore may be a hotter place to live for a few hours during the Pacquiao fight. Nevertheless, whether Pacquiao wins or loses, the Philippines as a nation is a winner because it can demonstrate it can unite together both in the Philippines and with its diaspora of people around the world to give spirited support to one of their own whose values and sporting prowess they deeply respect.

Philippines to Fight USA as Most Expensive Mega Boxing Match
in History Looms for a Mammoth Mayday Payday:
Manny Pacquiao (Pacman) to Pack his Punches for
Floyd Mayweather as Both are Expecting Pay Packets
of More Than $100 Million Each
SATURDAY, 2 MAY 2015 (Pacific Time Zone UTC-08:00),
MGM GRAND LAS VEGAS, USA
The boxing world is going crazy. How else can anyone describe insane ticket prices of close to $130,000 (approximately 5.7 million Philippine Pesos) each for the Pacman versus Mayweather fight? This close to 'half a billion dollar mega fight of the century', as it is being billed, has eclipsed any fight that has come before it. In Australia records have been smashed for the biggest amount of pay-per-views for an overseas televised event. Coverage starts on the Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) 11am on Sunday, May 3rd; Western Australia, Perth time 9am. Televised coverage will start in the Philippines at 8am.
This is a long anticipated fight between these two legends of the boxing ring. Up until this looming fight the action has been more of a cyber war campaign between the supporters of the two boxing legends as they traded online insults and taunts.

Manny Pacquiao was born 17th December 1978, in Kibawe, Bukidnon Province, which is in the rich agricultural rolling mountains of Mindanao, southern Philippines, which is also described as Mindanao's bread basket. Floyd Mayweather was born 24th February 1977 in Grand Rapids City, Michigan State, USA.
Their fighting pedigree statistics are as follows:
Manny Pacquiao (Pacman): 57 wins (38 via knockouts), 5 losses and 2 draws.
Floyd Mayweather: 47 wins (26 via knockout), 0 losses and 0 draws.
May the best boxing force be with both these highly trained sporting elites for this May 2nd fight. However, if the greater force of the winning spirit and superior boxing skill is with Pacman (who is also mentally skilled in throwing political punches as a Philippine Congressman) then this will be a bad weather mark on Mayweather's so far undamaged boxing record. This is what has the boxing world buzzing with fever pitch speculation as many believe Congressman Pacman has the 'right stuff', mentally, physically and spiritually, to achieve a historic win.
The Philippines has a long tradition of boxing. It was the host of the 1975 "Thrilla in Manila" between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier which was one of the greatest boxing fights of all time.
The Pacman versus Mayweather fight is a fight that will stop a nation. On an interesting side note, in the Philippines crime rates significantly drop to very low levels or to zero during a Pacman fight as confirmed by the national police. Therefore, the only fight in the Philippines, so to speak, is the Pacman fight which helps keep the peace.

“On behalf of the Philippine Government, I congratulate the Carranz Football Club from the Philippines for winning the 2013 Kanga Cup Under 18s Division Football tournament. The Carranz FC, composed of a selection of Teen Azkals stalwarts, won a tightly contested finals match against Capital Football Senior NTC at the Australian Institue of Sports in Canberra, Australia today, 12 July 2013.
“The impressive win of Carranz FC underscores the natural affinity of Filipinos for football, and is a testament to the agility, competitiveness, hardwork and team spirit of our Teen Azkals. I am confident that this win will encourage more Filipino youth to be involved in sports football in particular, to develop discipline and strength of character. The Philippines has shown great potential in regional football competitions.
“Teen Azkals should also be commended for doing its share in deepening Philippine-Australia relations in the field of sports.
“I wish the Teen Azakals the best of luck in their next competition in Jakarta this September, and I look forward to Carranz FC defending its Kanga Cup title in Canberra next year.”

The Carranz Football Club team,
selected by the Philippine Football Federation, arrived
(Saturday evening 6th July 2013) in Canberra, Australia
for the Kanga Cup International Football Competition
The Carranz Football Club team, representing the Philippines, has arrived in Australia to play in the Kanga Cup. The opening ceremony will be held in the home of Australia's Olympic elite, the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS). The AIS is truly a world class venue, with many facilities, which is like a mini sports city in the northern suburbs of Canberra.
Refer to the details below for a memo sent to players and also a map of the main AIS stadium, which is just one of the great sporting facilities provided at the AIS. The photo below left is from the Kanga Cup at the AIS indoor stadium in 2011.

Photo: The Carranz Football Club team, 7.40pm, Saturday, 6th July 2013 (newly arrived in Canberra 1 hour before this photo was taken). For almost all the team this is their first time outside of the Philippines. Arriving in Canberra in the middle of a near sub-zero winter evening was definitely a new experience for them, however this team is mentally and physically robust to deal with any challenge. This 'Elite All Star' team was selected by the Philippine Football Federation. They are university students from different parts of the Philippines, as well as three students currently based in the USA and Germany. The team is well led, as they are under the competent training, guidance and development of their affable head coach Marlon Maro, pictured far right.

Philippine-Australian Basketball League (PABL), Canberra
Finals, Saturday June 1, 2013
Congratulations to all the participants in the PABL, Canberra, 7th season championship, held at the Australian National University (ANU) gymnasium and fitness centre. The Huskies showed their on-court professional prowess to win the championship. Well done to the Huskies. Also well done to Nestor Tampipi, the very popular President of FASCan, pictured above, as well as his committee and sporting community for their tireless efforts in
overseeing and participating in such a great event.
The party afterwards was also a great event. Nestor wrote a letter of gratitude to the Filipino-Australian community leaders within the ACT and an embassy official who attended the awards ceremony and handed out the medals. The attendance of different community leaders and an embassy official demonstrated how the Filipino-Australian community can come together for significant events and work together.
Albert de Jesus, President of the Philippine-Australian Association of the ACT (PAA-ACT) summed up the atmosphere of the event when he wrote to Nestor:
"It was a good gathering and my wife and I have enjoyed the FASCAN PABL hospitality. The company was excellent and the food is a great bonus. Thank you for taking us back to time when our family gathered in front of the TV every Friday barracking for our basketball team. The games were very entertaining and the crowd were really into it. The PAA will always support your organisation for any future events. Please extend our thanks and appreciation to your community and the committees.
