Dynamic Dami Does it For Australia at Eurovision,
The World's Biggest Song Contest, and becomes a
Great Face and Spirit of Modern Australia. (14th May 2016)
Poster: Dami Im who sang the "Sound of Silence" at the Eurovision Song Contest, which is the biggest song contest in the world. The Australian flag makes up the love heart within the word "Eurovision" above.
When it comes to world-class singing talent, Australia is up there near the top. The Eurovision song contest is considered the biggest and best in the world with a global TV audience in the hundreds of millions. Australia's Dami Im took to the Eurovision stage and narrowly missed out on winning the first prize. RFA was privileged to previously interview Dami Im after being invited backstage at an event in the Capital Country region of Australia.

Dami, originally of Korean background, came to Australia as a child with her parents and is now an Australian superstar on the global stage. Dami's Eurovision song for the grand final was outstanding and mesmerising.
The winner, Jamala, was from Ukraine. Jamala sang a highly political song about Russian oppression of the Ukrainians which struck a chord with the audience, particularly after Russia requested that the Ukrainian singer should be banned.
Dami Im sang "Sound of Silence". The whole nation of Australia was behind her. She clearly won the votes of the judges, however narrowly came second in the audience vote. Dami performs with real spirit and it is a spirit that Australians like. Australia is now a very well-adapted and mature multicultural society.
Dami Im is a great face and spirit of modern Australia.
The overwhelming majority of Australian society does not see any difference in a person's ethnic background when judging who is Australian or not. Only a small extreme minority - which every country in the world possesses - would disagree. Australians regard all people as equal, as they come from all over the world. Sharing in the title of "Australians" are Australia's proud indigenous population, and equally proud people from Asia, Africa, North and South America, and all over Europe and the Pacific.
According to historians, Australia's Aboriginal custodians of the land are said to have arrived in Australia more than 40,000 to 50,000 years ago. Those of Anglo Australian descent, arrived approximately 250 years ago under the rule of the British Empire. 150 to 170 years ago many more free settlers came from China, America and even the Philippines during the Australian gold rush period in Victoria and the pearl diving in the north of Australia. In the last 70 years - another major historical migration wave - many have come from across all countries in the world. This is also the time that many Filipino workers and families migrated to Australia.

Too many new migrants to Australia, including Filipino-Australians, still mistakenly use the term "Australian" as an exclusive term, denoting those of "Anglo Australian" descent - thus engaging in the trap of self-exclusion with their own words, habits and beliefs - because Anglo Australians, originally deriving from the British Isles, make up the majority of Australians today. This is not an educated narrative for what modern Australia represents, because the term "Australian" includes everyone of all cultures and family ethnicity. As such it should be used as an 'inclusive term', not as a 'them and us' type term.
Australia has developed a highly successful multicultural society which welcomes people of all ethnic backgrounds and celebrates all world cultures. Australia is a society based on the values of cultural equality. It is not afraid of other cultures and indeed welcomes these cultures from around the world which makes it a stronger society, whilst simultaneously creating its own unique mixed modern culture and spirit.
Australia is proud of Dami Im, as a Korean-Aussie, just as it is proud of its Aboriginal-Aussies, Anglo-Aussies and Filipino Aussies - to name a few. Australian society is based on many noble values as a free and democratic society. Important amongst these values are equality, fairness and celebration of each other's unique gifts. The face of Australia can be of an Australian Filipino, Korean, African, Arabian, British, continental European, Aboriginal, mestizo (mixed ethnicity) or many more.
It is the spirit of Australia that counts most of all and defines people more than their physical features. Dami Im's spirit on stage is particularly notable as one of Australia's great spirits. Dami is proud to be Australian, whilst also proud to be of Korean descent, just as many Filipinos are proud to be Australian, whilst also proud to be of Filipino descent.

Staying On Page for Every Stage:
Kate Ceberano of Filipino-Australian Heritage
Sings the Australian National Anthem for Australia's Premiere Sporting Event, The 2015 AFL Grand Final in front of 100,000 People and a Live TV Audience of Millions.
Kate Ceberano is a household celebrity name in Australia. She is considered by many to be one of Australia's great entertainers and much loved celebrities, with a successful career in singing, stage performances and TV.
As a singer she is accomplished in the soul, jazz and pop genres. She has also had forays into musicals such as "Jesus Christ Superstar", and won a "Dancing with the Stars TV series competition. She was the Director of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival from 2012 to 2014. Her TV career includes hosting her own late night cabaret-style show on ABC TV, being a judge for Australia's inaugural season of "X Factor", and being a popular presenter on Nine Network's "Getaway" international travel television series. |
Kate was born in Melbourne to an American father of Filipino descent, who was a karate master, and to an Australian mother whose forebears were some of the earliest European settlers and government officials in the Australian states of South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania which before Federation in 1901 were separate British colonies.
One of the greatest honours to be bestowed upon an Australian entertainer is to be invited to sing the national anthem of Australia in front of Australia largest sporting crowd of 100,000 people in Melbourne for the iconic AFL Grand Final, which is Australia's version of the American Super Bowl. Kate Ceberano also sang at a previous AFL Grand Final in Melbourne in 2002 for the showdown between the Collingwood Magpies and the Brisbane Lions. The highly anticipated 2015 Grand Final showdown was also between teams from different parts of the Australian continent with the Hawthorn Hawks playing the West Coast Eagles from Perth.

The highly anticipated 2015 Grand Final showdown was also between teams from different parts of the Australian continent with the Hawthorn Hawks playing the West Coast Eagles from Perth.
Kate Ceberano, with her soulful voice and big spirit, gave a seamless performance of the national anthem, "Advance Australia Fair", until she got towards the end when she 'fluffed' the lyrics by singing off page as she relied on her memory whilst on stage.
She sang: “In history’s stage let every stage advance Australia fair”. It should have been: “In history’s page let every stage advance Australia fair”. |
The Twitterati (frequent users of the social media Twitter) were quick to notice even though no one in the crowd seemed to realise because overall the singing of the anthem was otherwise flawless and very well received. The semantics of the anthem were not adversely affected - as a page could be loosely described as a literary stage - even though the tautology was obvious. American pop icon Chrsitina Aguilera messed up the lines to America's "Star Spangled Banner" national anthem at the Super Bowl in 2011 by more than just a single word, so Kate Ceberano should not feel too bad.
Looking on the positive side, both Kate Ceberano and the Australian public would now be more familiar with the correct words to national anthem of Australia.
One thing is for sure and that is both on history's stage and history's page Kate Ceberano is a 'top of the tree' legendary performer in Australia's great cosmopolitan society. If she does come back and sing the national anthem for the 2016 AFL Grand Final, or for that matter any other event where she sings the national anthem, it would be understandable if someone was to wager that with past mistakes marked on the professional learning gauge her memory would be on page for every future great stage.

emerged the Filipino Beatles and their closely clutched musical instruments!
Now they have taken the music world by storm...
The city of Tacloban in the Philippines was ground zero just one and a half years ago when the world's largest recorded tropical storm in history, Typhoon Haiyan (also referred to as Typhoon Yolanda outside the Philippines) crossed land. It completely flattened the city.
The Reo Brothers (Ronjoseph, Ralph, Reno and Raymart), from the Otic family, lost their family house and all their belongings except for the clothes they wore and their guitars which they protected. They moved to Manila and in this short time they have toured the world doing renditions of 1950s thru to 1970s music. They are lookalikes of the iconic British band the Beatles, and in August 2014 they were the first Filipinos to ever perform at the historic Cavern Club, in Liverpool, England which was the birthplace of the Beatles. Earlier in 2014 they also performed at the Theater in Maddison Square Garden, New York City, at a concert in Southern California titled "Here comes the Sun", and in Tokyo, Japan. |
One of the support acts includes the highly engaging international Filipino-Australian entertainer Brian Lorenz whose combined singing and showmanship talent is in hot demand around the length and breadth of Australia.

"I belong to a choir called Sydney Sonata Singers. The group is a band of 26 senior Filipino residents in Western Sydney whose life’s mission is mainly to revive and promote classic Filipino music. We have also included some English songs to cater to our wider audience in New South Wales. The group’s signature 3-voice choral rendition is made possible thru the guidance of Louisa ‘Loy’ Tagudin, choirmaster/arranger. We are resident artists of Blacktown Arts Centre participating in multicultural activities of our local council in addition to various Filipino functions. Last year, we did 2 concerts mainly for Haiyan/Yolanda survivors, performed at the internationally acclaimed 19th Biennale of Sydney at Cockatoo Island, and participated in the Western Sydney Community Choirs Opera Presentation at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall. We have also 2 recorded CDs."
Congratulations to Tessie Cayanan and the wonderful Sydney Sonata Singers for forming such a wonderful and inspiring singing group. Also, Ms Cayanan sent a message of support to RFA: "I always enjoy the news you send me via emails." Mary Ann Van Der Horst, popular Filipino-Australian X Factor Australia contestant and Dami Im X Factor 2013 winner team up on Saturday 8th February 2015 to give a performance of
GOOGONIAN PROPORTIONS, in Googong.
The Googfest 2015 is on this Saturday, 7th February at 5pm with special performances by Mary Ann Van Der Horst and Dami Im.
Mary Ann Van Der Horst gave a magnificent performance in X Factor 2014. She was one of the crowd favourites and is another example of the stellar talent of Filipino-Australians on the national Australian entertainment stage. She teams up with the famous Dami Im, who has her own cult like fan group. |
They will perform in Googong which is on the New South Wales (NSW) side of the state and territory border with the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Googong is a growing residential area and many people who live here work in Canberra. Due to land shortage in the ACT and the higher cost of living, many people are choosing to live on the NSW side of the boarder and land prices are on the rise in these areas. If you wish to see one of Mary Ann Van Der Horst's performances then you can click the youtube video clips above or on the right.

The Brilliant Brian Lorenz on Stage in Sydney,
Rooty Hill RSL, 26th October 2014

He will be performing as the main act on the 26th October 2014.

Outstanding Performance by Original Philippine Music (OPM)
Superstar Jim Paredes, Sydney, 4th October 2013
Jim promised something big for his first solo performance in Australia. He delivered and exceeded expectations. Jim was at his best whilst delivering great songs composed by himself and from his Apo Hiking Society days. He interacted with the sellout crowd of thousands, which RFCA was part of. He performed like a true veteran showman and kept the audience clapping and cheering.
Ala Paredes, Jim's beautiful, sophisticated and classy daughter who has a background in arts and the media, also graced the stage with a stellar, flawlessly delivered, solo performance of the Filipino song "Sa Ugoy ng Duyan". There is another Paredes star on the rise and Jim is very proud of his daughter! "Like father like daughter", as one excited fan shouted. The legendary Louie Ocampo, a Filipino composer and arranger who has created the theme songs for many Filipino TV shows and movies also starred on the piano. |
When the concert finished with patriotic music and the waving of a large Philippine Flag the audience gave a standing ovation with loud cheering and clapping. The audience loved the entertainment and left wanting more!

Filipino Tenors and Philippine Artists Exhibition at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, Penrith, Sydney, 20 July 2013, Melbourne 27 July 2013
and meeting with Jim Paredes:
Report from Cecilia Flores, FCCACT President
"We thoroughly enjoyed the concert. The Filipino tenors are pretty impressive as well as the lineup of Philippine artists and the showcase of their respective artwork. All other concerts including the one in Melb next weekend is sold out. It's the first Philippine Artists Festival in Australia. Erico Soliman's sister, Nectar Soliman, is one of the artists. Jim Paredes from Apo Hiking Society was there too and we had a chat. He's having his own show in Sydney in October." [Cecilia Flores - photo on left] Thanks Cecilia for the update. The performance by Jim Paredes from Apo Hiking Society, as mentioned by Cecilia, would be great to attend in Sydney. The recent performances by the tenors and artists this weekend as well as the upcoming performance of Jim Paredes demonstrates the great depth of artistic Philippine talent available to the Filipino Australian community.
