Multi-denominational carols and celebrations for Christmas in the Filipino-Australian community. (December 2016)
Photo: Kym Kunze, Myrna Henkel and Zeny O'Reilly who just finished singing carols in the downtown Gungahlin region of Canberra, at the front of the Gungahlin Marketplace complex. They represented the Anglican Christian church.

The northern suburbs of Canberra are just an approximate two hour drive from the southern most suburbs of metro Sydney. The carol singing by the Baptist and Anglican Churches of Gungahlin saw the crowds spilling onto the streets as a teenager rides past on his bike.

This church has been filled to capacity for this service. The Simbang Gabi of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) was only started last year by Fr Luis Viovicente from the Philippines. It was such a success last year that it has continued to draw the big crowds over 9 nights and has also gained attention by the church hierarchy. On the first night of the Simbang Gabi 2016 Archbishop Christopher Prowse of the Canberra ACT and Goulburn (New South Wales (NSW)) Archdiocese, appointed by Pope Francis in 2013 conducted the mass to the delight of the congregation.

Classical Rina Benedictos continues to shine through the
power of performing arts and culture. (November 2016)
Photo:
Mrs Rina Benedictos at a recent Catwalk and Design event in Canberra holding a "Canberra Reporter" Filipino community newspaper which featured her on the cover page for its November 2016 edition. |
Rina Benedictos is a high achiever as a classical singer and performer. She currently lives in Canberra and has performed at the local, national and international level.
She rendered a world-class performance at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) where the Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth II delivered the opening speech. She was also selected to lead the Australian National Anthem for Senators and Members of Parliament. She says that another memorable moment for her was a performance she did at a 40th Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) meeting. Rina continues to perform and volunteer her services on the local scene. She just completed a gig at a "Catwalk and Design" event in Canberra which was a modelling and fashion design competition held in early November 2016. She will also be emceeing at the big Filipino-Australian event of Pasko sa Canberra (Christmas in Canberra) at the grounds of the Philippine Embassy of Australia, on the 4th December 2016. |
Behind her great looks, performing talent and personality, Rina is also highly educated with a Masters Degree in Philosophy from the University of the Philippines (UP).
Rina lists her greatest achievement as being a mother. Rina and her husband Dennis Benedictos, who is a talented sports identity and administrator within Canberra, have a beautiful baby daughter called Serafina.
Watch out for the name Serafina in the future as she may also become a performing artist on the local, national and international scene like her mother as she has the good looks, good social skills, intelligence and strong spirit like her parents. Rina comments about motherhood: "It has defined my very identity, my divine stature and nature."

RFA's Trash Story on Francis Sollano also Makes
Front Page of the Main Newspaper in the
Nation's Capital the Following Day. (3rd November 2016)
Last night (Wednesday 2nd November) RFA ran with the headline "One Man's Trash is Another Woman's Fashionable Treasure."
This morning (Thursday 3rd November the Canberra Times, the main newspaper in Australia's national capital ran with the headline of "One Man's Trash..." and had a large picture of Francis Sollano on the front page, which was above the national blanket coverage story of chaos in the Australian Parliament with two crossbench senators vacating their positions due to what could be said is trashy circumstances and behaviour. Obviously, Sollano's trash or trashion, as a visiting Filipino to Australia was far more important to report on as the main pictorial story than what could be described as trashy happenings in the highest Parliament in the land. After all, Sollano is world recognised for his trashion designs and as such is a leader in his field. Congratulations again to Francis Sollano. RFA and our national and global audience of followers and friends are proud of your achievements as a leader in sustainable development and social empowerment amongst communities. |

Strong Spirited and Ever Jovial Emely Aguinaldo Mills at the Belconnen Arts Centre, Canberra, (August 2016)
Emely Aguinaldo Mills - named after the first president of the Philippines, President Emilio Aguinaldo - is a dance performer and recently attended the kaleidoscope of dance performances by the lake in Belconnen on 28th August 2016.
Belconnen is a suburban area of Canberra, however the buildings in downtown Belconnen are as high as the office blocks in Canberra's Central Business District. Belconnen is booming as a residential area, and the buildings keep getting higher as land supply runs short. The Belconnen Arts Centre occupies a prime location in the heart of Belconnen on the edge of beautiful Lake Ginninderra.
Photo: Just one small part of Belconnen near the lake close to the Belconnen Arts Centre. This is only the suburbs of Canberra, as land value becomes serious prime time in the move to go higher. Canberra now has four of these major regional centres outside the main downtown Central Business District. These regional suburban centres are Belconnen, Woden, Tuggeranong and now Gungahlin, the newest and most modern in Canberra far north next to the federal highway to Sydney, which is set to get the tallest building in the Australian Capital Territory. There is now much competition amongst the suburbs for high rises, however all are getting a good share due to land shortages.
The dancing at the Belconnen Arts Centre entertained the crowd with many different styles.

Call for Submission of Abstract Papers (due end of March) for the
Biennial Philippine Update Conference 2016 at the
Australian National University (ANU).
The Philippines is currently being touted as an emerging major Asian economy, or "Asian Economic Tiger", a tag often used for other successful economies in the region in the late 20th and early 21st century. However, one of the big questions posed for this conference is: "Can the Philippines sustain this growth momentum and propel the country towards robust economic development following the change in leadership after the May 2016 national elections?" |
RFA photo [Nov 2015]: Bonifacio Global City (BGC), Manila, Philippines, which is at the lead of an economic boomtime revolution within Philippine society.
|
Analysis will also be undertaken to examine the "winners and losers" in the economic model, particularly in regard to the nature of this growth - whether and to what extent wealth has trickled down the socio-economic ladder and addressed the problems of persistent high unemployment and widespread poverty.
Photo: Legazpi City, in Albay Province of the Bicol Region at the southern end of Luzon Island, with the towering iconic Mayon Volcano in the background. For Philippine economic expansion to be sustainable and help eradicate poverty then it must be able to devise a plan to reach further into the provincial areas in order to provide economic opportunities for the whole country so as to unlock the great human potential of Filipinos on the national and international economic stage.
|
Conference organisers would like to invite people to submit abstract papers for the conference.
Organisers have extended the deadline to March 31, 2016 to accommodate broader submission on the topics outlined. Topics on the Philippines that fit broadly with the political, social and economic themes of the conference include the following:
Abstract proposals should be between 250-300 words only. |

Archbishop, Most Reverend (Rev.) Adolfo Tito Yllana
from the Philippines the new Apostolic Nuncio to Australia -
The Vatican's Ambassador (2015)
Archbishop, Most Rev. Yllana, born 1948 in Naga City, in the beautiful Bicol region of the main island of Luzon in the Philippines, was appointed as the Apostolic Nuncio to Australia by Pope Francis in early 2015. Most Rev. Yllana now lives in the Vatican's version of a diplomatic embassy in Australia's Capital of embassies, Canberra. The 'Vatican Australian Embassy' is called the "Apostolic Nunciature Chancery". It is a palatial complex located in the prestigious hedged and gated complex Red Hill area of Canberra close to Federal Parliament House, Capital Hill, home to many senior diplomats, embassy staff and business representatives from around the world.
|
The Coat of Arms of Most Rev. Yllana has 4 parts. The colours in the 4 parts indicate the faith (blue) as the beginning of grace coming from God and pervades everything, to which the human will responds to (silver) in the practice of the virtues.
- The star indicates the light of sanctifying grace.
- The rose represents the Virgin Mary, mother and help of all Christians (here the rose represents Our Lady of Peñafrancia, the Patroness of the Bicol region, to whom Most Rev. Yllana, just like every Bicolano, has a special devotion attachment).
- The undulating waves indicate water, which penetrates everywhere it passes making life flourish, as the pastoral work of Most Rev. Yllana is indicated in the motto "to preach (proclaim the Gospel, announce the good news or evangelise) and to serve".
- The book indicates the Gospel, as the word of God, which inspires, teaches and guides every action of life.
