#120 - RFA Interview (December 2015 - on location)
Papal Ambassador to Australia,
Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Adolfo Tito Yllana.
Archbishop Adolfo Tito Yllana was appointed as Vatican's Ambassador (Apostolic Nuncio) to Australia, earlier this year. He is originally from Naga City, Camarines Sur province, in the Bicol region of the Philippines which is located at the southern end of the main Philippine island of Luzon. Naga City is world-renowned as the Pilgrim City, as it is home to the largest Marian pilgrimage in Asia, the Our Lady of Peñafrancia.
Archbishop Yllana celebrated mass on the 8th day (22nd December) of the 9 day Simbang Gabi devotional series of masses held at St. Monica's church in Evatt, Canberra. |
The Simbang Gabi is an important religious tradition in the Philippines which has now been brought to Australia. The church had been close to capacity for the previous 7 nights. The presence of the Vatican's Ambassador, who resides in Canberra, caused the church to overflow with people standing outside the doors.
More than 95% of the church attendees were of Filipino heritage, demonstrating the large and devoted Filipino-Australian community and vibrant multiculturalism in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and surrounding capital country region of New South Wales (NSW). In this region of the ACT and surrounding NSW towns, Filipino Australians number in the many thousands of people, from an Australia-wide population which numbers in the many hundreds of thousands.

The Archbishop is very much a man of the people. He has a warm, friendly and easy- going welcoming personality which makes him very popular. After the church service the crowd poured outside and celebrated in typical Filipino style with a great spread of traditional food and drink.

Her Excellency Belen F. Anota:
Farewell and Happy Birthday on Christmas Day
(on location Philippine Embassy Canberra - December 2015)
Her Excellency, Ambassador Belen Anota has been the Philippine Ambassador to Australia from 2011 to 2015.
Australia and the Philippines - who are two geographically close Asia Pacific neighbours - are long-time friends and allies, and during Ambassador Anota's tenure of office there has been a further strengthening in bilateral political, economic, strategic and wider societal relations. |
Ambassador Anota is retiring from her position as Ambassador to Australia, as well as from her long and industrious career as a diplomat with the Republic of the Philippines Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). She joined the department in 1977. In her 38 years of loyal and very productive service she has held many senior posts, including in Israel, Indonesia, Singapore and Japan, as well as being the Executive Director of ASEAN affairs in the 1990s.
Ambassador Anota will be missed both within the Philippine DFA and the Australian diplomatic scene, as well as the wider community.
Her last public appearance in Australia was at the Philippine Embassy Christmas party which was attended by thousands of people from around the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), interstate, and overseas. Ambassador Anota was born on Christmas day, 25th December 1950. Her first name Belen is a Spanish word meaning Bethlehem, which is where Jesus was born more than two millennia ago. During the interview with RFA, Ambassador Anota mentions about her achievements and the great optimism she has for ongoing relations between the Philippines and Australia. She also gives a sneak peek into her retirement plans in regard to setting up a museum, as well as providing some details about the new highly talented ambassador about to take her place. |
Her husband, Attorney (Atty) Apolonio Anota Jr. - who was also previously interviewed by RFA - is the Executive Director of the Nayong Pilipino Foundation, a government-owned corporation which is setup to operate a Filipino theme park. This theme park has a focus on Filipino culture and history. Nayong Pilipino is located at Clark Expo, Pampanga City, the former site of the USA military's largest overseas base.

It seems, therefore, that culture, arts and organisational talent run in the Anota family, and that Ambassador Anota may be as busy and productive in retirement as she was in the Philippine diplomatic service.
RFA hopes to bring you more stories about Ambassador Anota's achievements running a museum, and also thanks the ambassador for her kind supportive words and moral encouragement for RFA.

It's admirable observing the great passion that Lexi has for Yoga and how this has made a significant difference in her own life. Lexi, the youngest of a large brew of siblings, says it has been a great 'glue' for her family. Now, Lexi is able to share this passion with others and demonstrate to them the great benefits of physical exercise, flexibility, and good eating. Lexi is happy when she can help others and as such is a great Filipino role model for people who wish to be proactive, positive and healthy.

Fr. Gerard Deveza,
PeopleAsia's People of the Year Awardee 2014,
and Founder of the Divine Healer Academy
(By: Gloria Ross - On location in the Philippines - November 2015)
Fr. Gerard Deveza is an amazing, generous and talented man. I got a chance to meet him recently during the last week of November 2015 both in Sorsogon Province, Bicol Region at the southern most part of the main Philippine island of Luzon, and also in Bonifacio Global City (BGC), Manila. In 2014, Fr. Deveza was a People of the Year awardee, a title bestowed by the prestigious PeopleAsia magazine at the Raffles and Fairmont Ballroom in Makati, metro Manila. He was recognized for his tireless community service in helping heal the crippling social inequalities of poverty for those who are the most vulnerable in society - our children who are the future generations and upon whom we can build a better future for society. He is also renowned within the Philippine nation as a priest who heals people physically, mentally and spiritually. People from all levels of society travel great distances to see him by land, sea and air. |

The Vice President of the Philippines, Jejomar Binay was amongst those to present Fr. Deveza with his well-deserved reward, amongst a line-up of other VIP leaders representing the national media, business and international airline sectors.

Fr. Deveza was the founder of the Divine Healer Academy, which is a kindergarten to year 10 high school in Cabid-an, Sorsogon. The school currently caters for approximately 300 students. The school started its operations in 2003 with 43 kindergarten students in a rundown room in an old formation house of the nuns of the Sister Servants of the Divine Healer.
Members of the Healing Servants' Foundation, the organization founded by Fr. Gerard in 2002, directly administer the ongoing needs of the school. The school has grown significantly since its early days. It now has many buildings, including a school executive and general administration office, classrooms, library, canteen, a large covered performance stage and concrete sports area. These are generously spread out with much space for grassed play areas.

[RFA Photo - November 2015]
The students all receive free education. Their tuition costs, school supplies, smart looking uniforms and even shoes are paid for. They are typically chosen from the poorest of the poor families within Sorsogon. Their principal is a seasoned, highly respected and dedicated teaching veteran from within both the public and private system of Sorsogon province. Principal Engay has surrounded herself with a good teaching team by choosing high quality dedicated teachers from throughout Sorsogon province, the wider Bicol region and even from Manila. Many of these teachers are considered amongst the best in their field. I witnessed one teacher, from Makati, Manila's famous glitzy high-rise business district, who with passion and professional focus was giving world-class singing and performance lessons to a group of high school students.
Above: The dedicated music and drama teacher from Makati, Manila, trains senior students for an upcoming provincial wide performance, whilst another teacher plays the guitar. [RFA Photo, November 2015].
After receiving his ordination as a priest, Fr. Deveza was also requested to work as a manager of a popular radio station in Sorsogon City. He is always quick with a joke and very witty. He infuses his great positive energy into any social gathering where he is present. As a priest in the Holy Rosary Seminary, Naga City, in the Bicolandia (Bicol) region, where he finished his priesthood studies in 1981, he was privileged to study under the tutelage of Most Reverend Yllana, who is now the Apostolic Nuncio (the Papal Ambassador) to Australia.
When I first met Fr. Deveza, it was like meeting an old friend who I have known for a long time as he has a very welcoming, sincere, humble and enthusiastic spirit. He makes a person feel comfortable and he is very easy to talk to for hours on end, as we did both with the recording on and off. When he is in Sorsogon at the school he likes to dress simple which puts him more in touch with the students who fondly call him Tatay (a colloquial Filipino term used respectfully by children, meaning father or padre).

Fr. Deveza would one day like to build a college for his students in Sorsogon. He always dreams of doing more good by making the future even brighter for those most in need, as he continues to build upon the substantial solid foundations of his magnificent and highly awarded achievements to date. He also said, "I just wish I could do or duplicate to other places in our country what I did in Sorsogon."
The photo below of the 2015 graduating class of year 10 students is more than enough evidence in itself of the great achievements of Fr. Deveza, as these students started in kindergarten soon after the opening of the school in 2003 and now they are well-adjusted and highly educated young adults ready to take their place in the world and positively contribute to it in their own unique ways.

Fr. Deveza mentioned that he would also like to visit Australia next year and visit different Filipino-Australian communities. It would be an honour for Australia if Fr. Deveza, a prestigious People of Asia awardee, was able to visit Australia's different cities and tell his story about how he has helped change the lives of so many children by breaking free from a cycle of poverty. The world needs more people like Fr. Deveza who always give of themselves for the benefits of others, which makes the spirit of our world more harmonious and caring.

#116 RFA Interview from Manila: 28th October 2015
Emil Sanglay:
Neo-Ethnic Rock Warrior and Filipino Cultural Patriot:
Multi-Awarded Legendary Music Artist and
Leader of the Pen Pen Band.
Emilio "Emil" Sanglay is a passionate and legendary composer-singer and arranger in the Philippines who has received many awards for his pioneering neo-ethnic Filipino singing and music. His musical style and that of the band Pen Pen which he leads, integrates and harmonises the sounds of Filipino indigenous instruments with modern pop music.
A passionate visionary, he revitalized Pen Pen with new members. Mr Sanglay and Pen Pen created a new repertoire of pop, rock and alternative music. The spectrum of this experimentalist repertoire ranged from the fusion of northern & southern Philippine cultural tunes and rhythms, art rock, soft & hard rock, atonal, new age, oriental to neo-ethnic rock music. |
His first big song was the iconic ever popular "Pen-Pen De Sarapen" in 1978, released by Vicor Records. Because of the supremacy of high technology games in this new generation which has brought with it western globalised culture, Emil Sanglay revived this children's song to bring back endangered Filipino traditional games such as "Taguan, Luksong Tinik, Luksong Baka, Sipa, Bahay-bahayan, Patintero, Tumbang-Preso" and many more.
He introduced and popularised neo-ethnic music into the Philippines in the 1970s and 1980s. He was a winner and finalist in many Metropop music festivals. He was also a national Philippine representative to the ASEAN song festival in Bangkok, Thailand in the 1980s and a top semifinalist in the USA song writing contest 2001.
More recently he was chosen by the Office of the Governor of Pangasinan Province - the largest province by population in the Ilocos Region of northwest Philippines - as a recipient of the 2014 ASNA Awards. This is also known as "The Outstanding Pangasinense Award" as a tribute to people who have excelled in their chosen profession or vocation.
Many of his and Pen Pen's songs have a mixture of traditional cultural, spiritual, environmental, social justice and political messages.
Some of these notable songs are:

- Bilanggo (Prodigal Son):
About a son who is a victim of poverty, ignorance, the law, misjudgement and societal misconceptions.
- Botika Sa Paso (Herbal Medicine Song)
- Barangay Tagay (Grassroot Traditional Politicians)
- Hi-Tek (High Technology Song)
In addition to this he was also one of the main cast for "Lapu-lapu", a multilingual neo-ethno classical-rock opera. He is also currently an instructor for voice, guitar and ethnic/world music.
Emil Sanglay's and Pen Pen's innovative contribution to Filipino musical heritage is very significant as it has demonstrated the spirit of Filipino culture through the creation of a new ethnic pop rock genre.
The following paraphrase from the "Reverberation.com" website is of particular interest in revealing the spirit of the revitalised Pen Pen band which Emil Sanglay has carefully cultivated:
Pen Pen returns with a mission to elevate and uplift the level of consciousness of this new age with harmony through their unconventional music. Pen Pen encourages aspirations towards international unity and natural laws: they remind all Filipinos of the adherence to their culture and traditions, the propagation of universal love for all mankind and all the creations, whilst contributing to the care of environment and advocating for social relevance and reconciliation.
Emil Sanglay wants to change society by appealing to the spirit of humanity. He is a spiritualist, which resonates clearly in his music. In regard to lawmakers who undertake wrongful deeds, Emil once said "I feel we can change society" by appealing to all those who implement the law to have a holy retreat of some sort to "revive their humanity". Positive reflection upon one's beliefs and actions is a good activity for all humanity, whatever a person's social status, culture or religion. Consequently, this spiritual wisdom mentioned by Emil would be particularly beneficial for leaders - wherever they may be in the world - who have a special obligation and greater responsibility to demonstrate the fairness of the law and always strive for local, national and international unity through upholding the principles of mutual respect, social justice and care for the environment which can bring about greater positive changes in society.

#114 - RFA Interview: 17 October 2015
Amelia Perales, a Filipino-Australian living in North West Tasmania,
Wins the Pride of Australia Award as She Demonstrates
Leadership, Determination and Humility.
Photo: Mercury newspaper photo from Tasmania's state capital in Hobart, Southern Tasmania where Amelia was awarded the prestigious Australian medal, October 2015.
|
By Gloria Ross, Director RFA, on location in Tasmania.
Amelia Perales from Burnie in North West Tasmania has won a pride of Australia award for 2015. She originally comes from the island of Leyte, in the Philippines. In her younger years Amelia worked hard to build a house of iron and concrete in Leyte to replace one made of coconut leaves and bamboo. However, even a concrete house was not enough to withstand the widespread destruction from a large typhoon. Thus, all the money from her hard work to build this blew away with the strong winds. After first moving from the Philippines she lived in South Korea and then moved to Australia. Whilst living in Tasmania she founded a Filipino Cultural Dance Group called Mariposa (butterfly in Tagalog - beautiful in Spanish). |
Amelia has a strength of character which is displayed through her determination to rise to any challenge and help others along the journey of life. Her warm personality endears her to people around her and she has used her leadership skills to bring together the wonderful Mariposa dance group.
I was in Hobart recently getting ready to travel back to Devonport, North West Tasmania, 300km away when I first saw the article about Amelia in the Hobart Mercury newspaper. My destination for the day was the Spirit of Tasmania ship passenger terminal where I could travel back with the car to Melbourne and then drive back to Canberra
I made contact with Amelia that morning where she was living in the city of Burnie, near the city of Devonport. I was amazed by Amelia's leadership skill when she decided to organise her Mariposa dance group with only a few hours notice and travel to Devonport from many different towns and cities across the large and diverse North West Tasmanian region to meet me at the interstate shipping terminal after my own overland trip from the southern end of the magnificently beautiful island of Tasmania. |
Photo above: Amelia inside the Spirit of Tasmania interstate passenger terminal in Devonport, Tasmania, October 2015.
Left: Prestigious Pride of Australia medal. |
The Mariposa dance group were friendly and warm. They all wore their traditional Filipino costumes which the state government of Tasmania helped fund to further multiculturalism in Tasmania. The group showed great hospitality by inviting my family and I to one of the houses nearby the passenger terminal. They made great Filipino food so there was no need for us to eat on the ship that evening as it made its 12 hour overnight journey to Melbourne, the capital city of Victoria.

Left to right, Mouye Spinks, Vivian Fielding, Norma Peirce, Dolor Ferguson, Ninita McNamara, Rodney Hine, Naomi Griffith, Nita Smith, Monica Perales, Amelia Perales and Hilda Bishop. |
Amelia has studied at the University of Tasmania and she has received a high distinction for communication and technology. Amelia always sets goals and has her sights on becoming a lawyer. She also proudly mentioned about her daughter who is receiving academic excellence awards at high school. After I boarded the ship Amelia and I communicated further and she wrote in an electronic message to me:
"To be able to achieve goals we need courage, motivation and innovation. In the future I intend to increase my education and be a lawyer to help those who cannot access justice because they have no money."
Amelia continued:
"Harmony for me can be music to dance to with all people as a multicultural group. We need harmony to be connected to one another. Harmony is very vast - love, kindness and respect for one another whatever the colour of your skin.
With Amelia's combined wisdom, humility, determination, leadership and very good communication skills she has proven to be a great choice for the Pride of Australia award. She will also go onto become a great Australian lawyer once she finishes her studies.
Amelia's story is a rags to riches type story, however the riches lay not in monetary value but in the value of a courageous, ethical and socially positive spirit which also is in harmony with the Spirit of Tasmania and the Spirit of Australia.

#113 RFA Interview - 17th August 2015
Nita Christian, Veteran Concert Promoter,
Chief Operations Manager and Co-owner of Sydney based
Philippine Entertainment Network (PEN)
Nita Christian is a veteran entertainment promoter in Sydney. Nita and her husband Peter founded the Philippine Entertainment Network (PEN) in 1981 under the name of Tagumpay Productions (Success Productions). The name was changed to PEN in 1993. Nita and Peter decided PEN should recognise and promote the plethora of Philippine talent with their unique artistry in Australia. Consequently the company was registered solely to import Filipino artists/entertainers into Australia.
So far PEN has produced and promoted 416 shows across cities and towns in Australia during the last 35 years. This has included sponsoring more than 400 singers, dancers, musicians, many of whom have been the top billed singers the Philippines has to offer. PEN has also organised concerts in some of Australia's largest venues costing close to $100,000 just for venue hire and other associated costs. However, the many thousands of people who have attended at these premiere locations have more than covered the lofty price tag for organising such grand events. PEN is still going strong and one of their next top billed artists coming to Australia in October 2015 is Lou Bonnevie. Lou is a Pop Rock Star, the Philippines' Clean Air Champion and President of Earth Day Jam Foundation. On the left is a picture of Nita with her husband Peter on the dance floor for a Philippine Independence Day function in 1976. They were a great and happy team back then, and 35 years on the two founders of PEN are still dynamic and enthusiastic whilst they continue to work as a great inspirational husband and wife team. |
RFA Audience Feedback:
"Congratulations on the interview with Mrs Nita Christian the original Concert Organiser in Sydney of Philippine Shows. She and husband Tito Peter Christian and the late Tita Amy Natividad were the pioneers of concert producing from the very early 1980s. I was there and watched their Carmen Patena Show in 1981. Her positive attitude in life is very admirable. Dianne's mantra is "You get out of life what you put in". Dianne has a foundation in humility and common sense, because she says she is careful not expect too much from life, whilst she makes sure that she always enjoys the ride. This is an honest and enviable mixture of carefree living and common sense-based wisdom and responsibility to give one a balance in life whilst living the dream.
Life in the cosmopolitan "Big Apple" can have its challenges, however it seems that Dianne is up for that challenge as she is being noticed on one of Manhattan's big stages and is being embraced as a New Yorker, where liberty, opportunities and dreams are bountiful.

First Secretary, Consul Jim Tito B. San Agustin, Philippine Embassy Australia, Presents the Legal and Diplomatic Details Relating to the West Philippine Sea (WPS) Dispute with China, Particularly the International Court and United Nations Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)
|
First Secretary and Consul Jim San Agustin at the Philippine Embassy of Australia in Canberra is a highly respected and experienced diplomat within the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs.
Consul San Agustin also has previous experience as a Consul in Los Angeles, USA, and Vice Consul in Beijing, China. He is also the Acting Director of the Office of Strategic Planning and Policy Coordination, Division II - Institutional Policies. His previous experience in the Chinese capital makes him more than qualified to present the legal and diplomatic details relating to the West Philippine Sea (WPS) dispute. |
He presents the Philippine case in great detail providing a balanced legal, diplomatic, environmental, economic and strategic perspective to the dispute as he emphasises the wider positive relationship with China and assertion that the WPS dispute is not the sum total of the Philippine relationship with China.
In the overall relationship the Philippines wants to be friends with China, and vice versa. Where there are significant differences, particularly in regard to the WPS, Consul San Agustin and the Philippine Government sees international law as the great equalizer which can help preserve the territorial integrity of all countries. The specific international law which the Philippines is relying on is the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) of which both the Philippines and China are signatories.
The concept of international law as the great equalizer is why the Philippines has initiated international legal action against China to help bring a peaceful resolution to the dispute without surrendering the territorial integrity of the waters near the Philippine coastline to any country, whether that country is big or small. As noted on many occasions before, the Philippines is a proudly independent country, which is patriotic about its motherland. Consequently, whilst the Philippines behaves as a good international citizen, respecting international law and other nations, it is not afraid to assert its own international rights to ensure other nations adhere to the same values and principles.

#098 - RFA Interview: 18th April 2015:
Dave Cecilio, Cine Cilio Film Director of the highly acclaimed Philippine patriotic movie "Watawat" (Flag)
Dave Cecilio is currently in Australia showing his highly acclaimed patriotic film "Watawat" (Flag), that tells the story behind the Philippine flag which was created in the Philippine independence struggle from Spanish colonial rule.
This is an example how a native population throughout the whole of the Philippines, from the far north of the Ilocos region, to the island of Mindanao and smaller Sulu islands in the far south and Palawan and surrounding islands in the far south-west were able to forge their own united identity. |
Filipinos took control of their own homeland from an outside European force which came from a land far away. Later, the Filipinos, also further struggled to achieve their independence from other outside forces such as the Americans and Japanese. Filipinos, consequently have a admirable reputation for being proudly independent.
This, therefore, makes Mr Cecilio's film an important historical production which can help unite a country further through a positive focus and reflection on the values which all Filipinos share in common. This focus on common positive values amongst Filipinos, of whom there are over 100 million people, will help the Philippines become a greater nation on the international stage. The Philippines can achieve greater economic wealth whilst most importantly helping distribute this wealth and development capital fairly throughout the country so everyone can benefit and all provincial regions can develop their true potential under one Watawat.

#097 - RFA Interview: 11th April 2015:
Professor Mark Turner,
Lecturer of Public Sector Management, Policy, Politics and Development in the Asia-Pacific, Head of Government Discipline at University of Canberra, and Lecturer, University of New South Wales (NSW), Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA).
Interview Topic: "THE PEACE DEAL IN MINDANAO
AND THE RECENT CONFLICT AT MAMASAPANO"
Professor Mark Turner, from the University of Canberra, and visiting fellow lecturer at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA), Duntroon, Canberra (which is Australia's equivalent of America's renowned West Point Military Officer Training Academy in New York State), talks about the recent troubles in Mindanao. He focuses on the Mamasapano incident, 25th January 2015, which resulted in the deaths of 44 Special Action Force (SAF) of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
SAF troops were involved in the search for and killing of international high ranking terrorists, including Zulkifli Abdhir (more commonly known as Marwan). Marwan, was a Malaysian terrorist bomb maker, who originally trained as an engineer in the USA. He became a senior leader of the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) which was responsible for the Bali Bombings. He also had connections with Al-Qaeda and the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) in the Middle East. |
Getulio Napeñas, the relieved SAF commander, estimates approximately 250 casualties on the other side, including private militias, however this is difficult to verify due to lack of evidence. Marwan, who was killed in the early stage of the SAF raid, was one of the most wanted terrorists in the world. The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had a $5 million dollar bounty placed on Marwan which will now apparently go to the informant of the SAF.
This incident, particularly in regard to the high SAF death toll, has had major political repercussions in the Philippines which has shocked and traumatised a nation, as well as raising many difficult questions on all sides. It has consequently shaken the presidency in the immediate opinion polls and threatens the Bangsamoro peace deal which was signed last year with great fanfare between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). Whether these consequential factors will continue to have a longer term negative effect on the President's popularity or the Bangsamoro peace deal will be determined over the coming months as it is dealt with at the highest levels of government; namely the President's Office, the Senate and House of Representatives (Congress).
RFA interviewed the Chief Philippine Government Negotiator, Prof. Miriam Coronel-Ferrer last year who expressed great optimism about bringing hundreds of years of ethnic and religious fighting in this region to an end. As a positive sign, the MILF is also keen to keep the Bangsamoro peace deal, negotiated with Prof. Coronel-Ferrer, on track.
Prof. Mark Turner, who specialises in Philippine policy, politics and development recently gave a presentation to the Philippine Studies Group (PSG) at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra. This was also attended by the Philippine Defence Attaché and Assistant Defence Attaché, as well as other senior officials from the Philippine Embassy of Australia.
Listen to the RFA interview with Prof. Turner as well as the detailed presentation he provided the PSG as he discusses the major implications, particularly in regard to whether he believes the Bangsamoro peace deal is derailed or delayed.

#087-RFA Interview: Broadcast 3rd January 2015
Aquilino "Nene" Q. Pimentel, Jr.
Good Governance Trainer for Local Government Officials
Former Philippine Senate President
Founder of Partido Demokratiko Pilipino (PDP) (which merged with Lakas ng Bayan party in 1983 to become PDP Laban),
and People Power Revolutionary
Former Senator Nene Pimentel, Jr. has had a significant impact on Philippine politics in the late 20th and early 21st century.
He rose to national prominence in 1971 when he was elected as a delegate for the Constitutional Convention, representing Misamis Oriental. During the 1970s and 1980s he was a strong opponent of the Marcos dictatorship and was imprisoned on numerous occasions during the dark days of martial law. When being arrested for the first time in 1973 to be incarcerated in Camp Crame, Nene Pimentel who had a young family at the time courageously said to his wife "Be brave. Don't cry". Political persecution, however, did not dim his strong spirit in speaking out for justice, fairness and democracy for the oppressed Filipino people. |
During an interview with RFA on Rizal public holiday - 30th December 2014 - former Senator Pimentel said:
"My stand against martial law was, you might say, dictated by my belief that freedom is essential to the development of our people. And I cannot stomach one man telling us you do this, do that, or else - in other words, his will will prevail over what is dictated by reason and by law."
Former Senator Pimentel founded the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino (PDP) in 1982 and merged it in 1983 with the Lakas ng Bayan party founded by Benigno Aquino Jr., who, in the same year, after voluntarily returning from a self imposed 3 year political exile in the USA, was assassinated at Manila International Airport while being escorted from the plane to a vehicle waiting to transport him to a prison. The combined party became known as PDP-Laban and became the biggest opposition group to the Marcos regime. Nene Pimentel helped the wife of Benigno Aquino Jr., Cory Aquino, overthrow Marcos in the 1986 EDSA revolution (more commonly known around the world as the People Power Revolution). Pimentel considered being the Vice Presidential running mate for Cory Aquino in 1986, however he stepped aside to allow the leader of another coalition party, which helped topple the Marcos dictatorship, to contest the position.
Under President Cory Aquino the formidable and feisty Nene Pimentel was given the responsibility of dismantling the structure of dictatorship and corruption which propped up the Marcos regime. One of his many proud achievements was separating the military from the police force to become two separate government entities.
In 2001 Nene Pimentel rose to become President of the Philippine Senate. He is a strong supporter of federalism in the Philippines.
He is currently retired from national political office, however he is not retired from offering his skills and services to helping improve the nation. Mr Pimentel talks with a passion about his current work providing good governance workshops to local government officials. He is also focused on helping educate the youth of today to become the good leaders of tomorrow. Mr Pimentel mentions with pride about a program for the youth called "Batang Transformers" [Youth Transformers] who will assist the Philippines in its transformation to create more transparent and accountable civil institutions which will help eliminate corruption.
