Pasko sa Canberra (Christmas in Canberra)
Philippine Embassy of Australia, 1 Moonah Place, Yarralumla, ACT
Sunday 7th December 2014
It's getting close to that time of year again for Australia's biggest Filipino Christmas party to be held in the gated grounds of the Philippine Embassy of Australia, on the edge of the Capital Hill Parliamentary Circle. Filipinos from all over Australia and even some from overseas come to Canberra for this event.
There are particularly many 'Sydneysiders' who make the short 3 hour road trip to Canberra to be part of the celebrations which includes food, commercial business stalls and fantastic entertainment. RFA is pleased to promote the "Brilliant Brian Lorenz" from Sydney. Brian was recently interviewed by RFA as a rising Filipino-Australian singing superstar with a big career ahead of him. Also appearing from Sydney will be an enthralling singing prodigy Jasmin Henry. If you can make it to Canberra for this event be sure not to miss the singing in action, as well as the other great events, and of course the fantastically delicious Filipino food. |

What is Open Gardens Australia?
Open Gardens Australia is a not-for-profit organisation that opens private gardens and organises garden-themed events for public enjoyment around the country.
Their aim is to promote the enjoyment, knowledge, and benefits of gardens and gardening in the Australian community, and to build strong public support for the development of gardens across the nation.
Established in 1987 as Victoria's Open Garden Scheme, our path to national expansion occurred over a period of two decades, with the final territory being added in 2000, when we truly became Australia's Open Garden Scheme.
In 2011 the organisation was renamed Open Gardens Australia, to better reflect the nature of our role as the premier national body opening private gardens to the public, rather than our operational framework (ie. Scheme).

Australia's biggest, and one of the world's biggest flower festivals. The Famous Flower Power of Floriade Canberra:
Official opening, Saturday 13th September 2014
Let a million flowers bloom! Yes, literally speaking.
In Canberra at the Floriade Festival, a million flowers blooming of many different colours is a reality and a feast for the eyes and a wonderful smelling sensation at the beginning of every spring season when the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) holds this world renowned flower extravaganza. This magnificent festival which is open day and night attracts close to half a million local Capital territorians, interstate visitors from around the vast Australian continent, and international visitors from around the world. However, despite this great attendance, the flowers still outnumber their adoring nature fans by 2 to 1. Entry is free. Be sure not to miss one of the ACT's largest tourist events. It's only an approximate 2 hour drive from the southern Sydney suburb of Campbeltown where many Filipinos live. 'Sydney siders' as they are affectionately called outside Australia's biggest city always make up a big proportion of the crowds at the Canberra Floriade. |

Canberra International Balloon Festival Spectacular
Saturday 8th to Sunday 16th March 2014
Also Canberra voted Australia's Most Liveable City 2014
Canberra is blessed with national and international festivals. The International Balloon Festival Spectacular is one such event to look up to as people raise their sights to the beautiful skies above the
Australian Parliamentary District and Capital Hill.
Canberra has also been voted as the most liveable city in Australia by the prestigious Property Council of Australia. Considering that Canberra is Australia's best planned city with multitudes of parks and well organized design of its city sprawl, it is not surprising that this organized cosmopolitan oasis in the mountains ranked number one. Canberra was built on the plan of Washington DC, and is sometimes also referred to as the "Monumental Capital of Australia" due to its multitudes of diverse national museums, statues, memorials and grand public infrastructure.

Australian National University (ANU) Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics partnering with the Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Space Environment Management, Canberra
in the Global War on Space Junk:
$150 million dollar research centre to be built.
A story from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) This story was read and discussed on
RFCA radio, Saturday, 15th March 2014.
RFCA radio, Saturday, 15th March 2014.
A new $150 million Australian research centre in Canberra is being set up to target space junk in Earth's orbit. The Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Space Environment Management, based at Mt Stromlo Observatory in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), will bring together work by researchers and industry groups from Australia and overseas. The centre will develop ways to track and remove more than 300,000 pieces of space debris in orbit. There is a real danger of 'Avalanche in Space' where objects crash into each other and cause a cascading effect of more crashes. This 'domino effect' could render all satellites inoperable for hundreds of years if a junk mitigation program is not undertaken. ANU Professor Matthew Colless says the centre hopes to find strategies for dealing with space junk like those seen in the Oscar-winning film Gravity. Professor Colless says he hopes lasers will eventually be used to remove smaller pieces of space debris.
"If we increase the power of the lasers that we have to actually gently push small bits of space junk, that makes them fall back to Earth more rapidly and burn up harmlessly in the atmosphere."
[Professor Colless, ANU].

National Multicultural Festival, Canberra
Friday, 7th to Sunday 9th February
Gloria Ross of RFCA will be a Master of Ceremonies (MC) for
the big event on Saturday and Sunday with an expected
record crowd of 300,000
The colour, the razzle, the dazzle, the entertainment and the food are enthralling, exciting and enticing! The National Multicultural Festival which will converge on and monopolise activity within the city centre of Canberra from Friday 7th to Sunday 9th February is Australia's biggest multicultural festival. It would rank as one of the best in the world. Organisers are expecting a record crowd this year of over 300,000 people. This is Australia's multicultural version of the Rio de Janeiro festival. Canberra, the political, diplomatic and bureaucratic capital of Australia, is home to almost every culture in the world and this is the time of the year that many swap their government and corporate office suits for traditional costumes and prepare their traditional food.
Many people come from Sydney, around the nation and from overseas to see this event. The leader of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Chief Minister Katy Gallagher, MLA, and the Director of the National Multicultural festival both talked to RFCA which will be part of the special multicultural festival RFCA radio program broadcast live from the event. Also, Gloria Ross was given the honour of being one of the MCs for the festival on stages 1 and 2.

Photos from the Sinulog Festival Canberra,
Sunday 19th January 2014
Congratulations to the Philippine Cultural Society (PCS) of the ACT and its organiser Feding Donaghue for a great Sinulog event.
A big crowd turned out to watch. The dancing was entertaining, varied and spirited. All age groups were involved. The smiles on the faces in the crowd were indicative of what a great job these the performers were doing. The PCS has adopted an island in northern Cebu, called Gibitngil Island for distributing charity. Proceeds of events such as the Sinulog festival and other fundraising conducted by the PCS will be donated to Gibitngil Island. |

Sinulog Festival Canberra, Sunday 19th January 2014
St Francis Xavier Church, Victoria Street, Hall, 10am
Cultural Presentation Hall Pavillon, Gladstone Street,
By the Philippine Cultural Society (PCS)
The Sinulog Festival at St Francis Xavier Church, in the ACT suburb of Hall is organised by Feding Donoghue at the Philippine Cultural Society (PCS). This Church is one of the ACT's oldest churches. Come along to the service on Sunday 19th February 2014 at 10am, as well as the following cultural presentation by the great PCS dancers. The Sinulog has been held every year in Canberra since 2003.
There are many other Sinulog, also called St. Nino, festivals happening around Australia. Sto.Nino means "Baby Jesus". Sinulog is a word from the Cebuano language of the Philippines meaning strong current flow which describes the forward-backward movement of the dance. This is a fluvial (water) festival which can depict the movement of a boat on the water. The dance steps involve 2 steps forward and 1 step backwards.
This Sinulog festival dance is performed mainly in Cebu and the surrounding Visayan region. It celebrates/ commemorates both the coming of Roman Catholicism with the arrival of the Spanish explorer Ferdinand Majellan, as well as the traditional culture of the local Philippine society in Cebu and surrounding areas before Majellan's arrival. Majellan gave a statue of baby Jesus to the wife of the Chief (Rajah) of Cebu.
During this festival a statue of Baby Jesus is held high as the centrepiece for the dance/ parade.

Canberra's International Flag Boulevard and New Year Fireworks
The RFCA photo of the fireworks and flag below was chosen as the main photo for the Manila Bulletin's around the world New Year celebration coverage.
Photos above by RFCA: Canberra, in all its cosmopolitan splendor, came alive for the 2014 New Year fireworks.
Next to the beautiful sparkling Lake Burley Griffin on the opposite side of the shore to Canberra central business district (CBD) is Canberra's own International Flag Boulevard. This International Flag Display in Canberra's Parliamentary Zone colourfully acknowledges the international presence in Australia's national capital. Each flag pole has a plaque at its base identifying the nation whose flag is flying from that pole. The display is arguably the one of the largest in the world and very popular with visitors and locals alike.

Chance Spotting of the Political, Brain and Fitness Elite
"Filipino-Australian Power Rangers"
What do you get when you combine the President of the most respected and largest political polling company in the Philippines, his three offspring and a Filipino-born world-leading neuroscientist Doctor from Australia's most prestigious university who is mapping the human brain with lasers,
all on bikes in the heart of Australia's political capital?
You get the 'Filipino-Australian Power Rangers (FAPRs).

In a chance meeting on Christmas day in Commonwealth Park, Canberra, Gloria Ross of RFCA met up with Dr. Vince Daria and Prof. Ronnie Holmes, both of whom have been prominent interviewees for RFCA in 2013. Prof Holmes' fit looking children were with him to make up the awesome pedal power ranger team whose 'cover has now been blown'. This part of Canberra, which has an impressive array of monuments making Canberra a 'Monumental City', near Parliament House on Capital Hill is also sometimes referred to as the 'Power District' where you can see politicians including the Prime Minister of Australia jogging or cycling with their security entourage. Canberra is truly an international city so its not surprising to see one of the Philippines' political power polling elite mixing it with the brain power of a world leading Filipino Australian neuroscientist all trying to exercise off their Christmas party food indulgences. Given the Olympic athletic look of this multitalented international team it's apparent that they are very successful in this endeavor as they can party, exercise and work hard!

'See the Light', and let the 'Light Be With You' inside
the 'Tunnel of Lights'!
Guinness World Record for most amount of Christmas lights at a residential house in Canberra, which attracts approximately 100,000 'Pilgrims of the Light' in the month of December, 2013.
Live at the scene roving report by Gloria Ross on a night before Christmas
The Richardson family in Canberra have now claimed the Guinness Book World Record in 2013 for the most amount of Christmas lights for a private house - over half a million, or approximately 520,000 to be more precise. I decided to go to the house near Capital Hill on a night before Christmas. I was astounded by the size of the Christmas pilgrimage to 'See the Light' and 'Feel the Spirit of Joy' in what was previously a very quiet neighbourhood. The streets for a radius of more than a kilometre around were clogged with parked cars and people walking to the house. The queue to get into the house was close to half a kilometre long winding back towards Parliament House. Some estimates of the total crowd size on this one night were up to 15,000 people. For the entire month estimates of the total visits were from 70,000 to 100,000. This would be enough to fill Australia's largest sporting stadiums.
There were food and drink stalls, government officials and police on hand to assist. Once inside the large front garden area and driveway of the property the light show was absolutely stunning as people walked through a tunnel of lights. Particularly stunning were the lights that lit up the magnificent towering tree which could be seen from streets away. The owner is kindly donating all the considerable money raised through voluntary gate donations to go to charity. Listen to the interview below with some of the charity workers. You can hear the sausages sizzle in the background. The charity workers suggested many tourists were coming from Sydney just to see the display, including people being bussed in, as this event has now become one of Canberra's big attractions.

The residential streets surrounding the house have taken on a commercial flavor as the hungry masses seek to be fed. Jesus multiplied the bread more than 2,000 years ago and these community helpers who are donating profits to charity were out multiplying the sausages and drinks. Information from an unnamed government official monitoring events at the scene suggested that this event has now become so big that it may need to be moved to the Central Business District of Canberra in order to respect the residential nature of the surrounding neighbours.

Canberra Political Quick Step, Filipino Style!
Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Community Language Schools'
National Conference and Annual Dinner
Australian National University (ANU)
12th October 2013
Canberra is the political capital of Australia, home to many politicians who can talk fast, but can they dance fast Filipino style without putting their wrong foot forward and getting their foot stuck? Jeremy Hanson, Member of the Legislative Assembly, ACT, and ACT Liberal Party Leader (third from left), along with Senator Kate Lundy of the Federal Labor Party and previous Minister for Multicultural Affairs (fourth from left), tried the Filipino national dance Tinikling. It was great entertainment watching the political quick step and fancy footwork in action on stage. Thanks both to Mr Hanson, MLA, and Senator Lundy for their participation and for entertaining the audience. It shows that both sides of politics can join as one in Australia in support of Australia's great multicultural communities, even when it comes to dancing. They were both fast learners.

The term ‘money politics’ is widely used throughout Southeast Asia, commonly as a vague but derisive label for political practices deemed unsavoury and in need of reform. But what is it, exactly, and how does it vary from one setting to another? Why is it important and what are its impacts?
On Friday, 30 August 2013, 18:00 -21:00, Prof. Paul D. Hutchcroft will provide a presentation to the PSG about 'Money Politics' in Southeast Asia. Particular attention will be given to his observation of the recent May 13 elections in the Philippines. Paul D. Hutchcroft is the founding Director of the School of International, Political and Strategic Studies (IPS) and Professor of Political and Social Change in the ANU’s College of Asia and the Pacific. "Tahanan" display for Canberra's centenary birthday party
As far as events in Canberra are measured this was probably one of the biggest events in the last 100 years, and the Filipino Canberra community were a part of it. The Learning Filipino Together (LFT) group, led by their President Kotch Velasquez, organized with the Philippine Embassy for a Jeepney to be put on display in Commonwealth Park, in a prime spot amongst the celebrations. The Philippine Ambassador, Her Excellency Belen Anota, also attended this function on Monday 11th March, which was declared a public holiday for all residents of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). The Jeepney display was a great attraction for kids and adults who had never seen one before and who were keen to have their photo taken with it. The photo above shows the Ambassador, standing in the middle row, 3rd from the right. See more detailed story below.

It was also great to see Cecilia Flores who was accompanying the Ambassador. The RFC is looking forward to seeing the Ambassador, Cecilia and Kotch, who are all distinguished invitees and speakers for the RFC upcoming broadcast launch this weekend (Kotch is also one of the accredited broadcasters at RFC). Thanks also to the tireless efforts of the LFT members and friends who helped on the day.
